The fetal period

The embryonic period is over, and the fetal period has begun, which will last until delivery. Your baby is not a fertilized egg anymore, nor a blastocyst, nor an embryo. He or she is now a fetus!

What’s Going on with the Baby

Joints are forming.

Finally your baby’s tail disappears. Nearly all the joints are formed this week – the wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees and ankles. Tiny fingers and toes are all visible and complete. All of the body systems – the digestive, circulatory, nervous, and reproductive systems – are fully formed by now.

Baby is about 27 – 35 millimeters

Your baby will be about 27 – 35 millimeters, half of which is for the length of the head and the other half for the rest of the body. The baby will weigh about 4 grams, which is approximately the weight of 4 paper clips. The eyes are open the whole time, since the eyelids are only beginning to fuse. The external genitalia, ears, and the upper lip are all starting to form as well. The baby’s heartbeat will be about 160 bpm (beats per minute). Your baby is now beginning to breathe, but he breathes amniotic fluid and not air like us.

What’s Going on with Mommy

Blood volume

Your tummy is now beginning to pooch out, especially if you’re carrying twins. During pregnancy, your blood volume will be increasing for about 40%-50%, so don’t be scared if your veins suddenly become noticeable in your breasts, legs and tummy.

Weight gain in pregnancy

Weight gain is an important topic to discuss during the tenth week. If you were underweight before you got pregnant, you should gain about 30-40 pounds during your pregnancy. If your pre-pregnancy weight was normal, you should gain about 25-35 pounds. In case you were overweight before all this started, make sure you gain only 15-25 pounds.

Now for Daddy

If Mommy starts feeling insecure about the changes in her body, make sure you regularly assure her that she is still the most attractive woman for you – big belly or not.
