Breastfeeding versus Bottle Feeding

Breast milk provides the ideal form of nutrition for newborns. However, infant formula is also an option for those mothers who are unable to generate breast milk or for those who choose not to breast feed. Bottle feeding is alright as long as it meets the nutritional requirements of the baby. Here are some points to help choose whether to breastfeed or bottle feed.

Breastfeeding advantages:

  • Breast milk contains antibodies being passed from the mother to the baby
  • contains lactose, protein, fats – which are easily digested by the baby’s undeveloped digestive system
  • vitamins and minerals
  • Free and convenient : no need to buy bottles, sterilize and clean every time
  • Obesity prevention
  • Smarter babies – studies show that babies that are breastfed have an IQ 5 to 10 points higher than formula fed babies
  • Skin-to-skin contact

Breastfeeding challenges:

  • Personal comfort – there is discomfort in breastfeeding especially during the start that is why most women are discouraged
  • Time and frequency of feedings Medicine and caffeine intake – some medicines are not advisable for breastfeeding women, as well as caffeine since these can be transferred into the milk and into the baby

Bottle feeding advantages:

  • Convenience – both parents can share the task of feeding the baby
  • Flexibility of schedule of feedings
  • Diet – mothers will not worry much about what she eats

Bottle feeding challenges:

  • Preparation – bottles must always be cleaned and sterilized and prepared milk must be consumed within a specific amount of time
  • Lack of antibodies – this is because antibodies cannot be produced artificially by manufacturers , they only comes naturally from mothers
  • Aside from the costs of bottles, nipples etc. formula milk are also expensive.
  • Constipation and gas-formation

Breastfeeding and bottle feeding both has its advantages and disadvantages. But whatever option you choose, be sure to talk to a doctor to consult about the options that is best for the mother and baby. After all, whether with breast feeding or bottle feeding, what matters is the connection between the mother and baby.
